The Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Abeokuta, was founded on 2nd February, 1991 and is sited at the former St Leo’s Teachers’ College at Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State. At the handing over ceremony of the school, the then Military Governor of Ogun State, Navy Captain Oladeinde Joseph, commended the Nigerian Navy for bringing a model secondary school to Abeokuta.

The then Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Murtala Nyako implored the school to train the children who would excel in all aspects of life. He emphasized that the Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Abeokuta, although a civil secondary, should be seen as as the Nigerian Navy’s equivalent of a military school.

The school which sits on about 35 hectares of land Ibara, Abeokuta, is the only NN secondary school that is all boys’ boarding school. The affairs of the school have been piloted Commandants since inception. The pioneer commandant was Cdre SEA Olamilokun retired, a onetime Director of Naval Education. Other past directors who had also headed the school include Cdre IO Owo-Onu, Cdre OO Olawunmi, Cdre DT Hinga, Cdre IM Mankilik and Cdre MA Adetunji.

The students’ strength as at 2022/2023 Academic session is 1,126 while the staff strength 348 drawn from military personnel MOD and contract staff as well as youth corps members.
